2013 Stewardship Award Winner – Educator Stewardship Category

Sara Waugh, of Lopez Island, greatly enhanced and expanded the BLM’s, San Juan Islands Experiential Education Outdoor Classroom Program during the past 3 years.  As the lead Environmental Educator for the BLM San Juan Island Office, Sara singlehandedly expanded the existing program on her own initiative to reach a larger and more diverse audience.  Sara’s work cultivates a deeper understanding of the natural world and fosters a broader appreciation for the interconnectedness of humans to natural systems.  Sara directly provided environmental education, activities and land stewardship ethics to over 700 participants and shared over 1800 hours of outreach over three summer seasons.   Sara’s dedication to environmental education and sharing the wonders of the natural world with others is inspiring and contagious.  Her enthusiasm towards assisting in the self-discovery of interconnectedness to nature brings her to the forefront of committed professionals worthy of admiration and recognition.
